Construction Supervision: The Critical Role of Pre-Pour Inspections

Construction Supervision: Pre-Pour Inspections
Pre-pour inspections are the last line of defence before concrete is placed. They verify that reinforcement has been placed correctly, formwork is adequate, and all prerequisites for a successful concrete pour have been met.
What Gets Inspected
A comprehensive pre-pour inspection covers reinforcement size and spacing, concrete cover to reinforcement, lap lengths and development lengths, post-tensioning duct placement and condition, formwork dimensions and alignment, set-down and penetrations for services, and cleanliness of the pour area.
Why It Matters
Once concrete is placed, errors in reinforcement placement cannot be corrected without demolition. A missed inspection can result in a structurally deficient element that may require costly remediation or replacement. Pre-pour inspections are therefore one of the most critical quality control activities in construction.
The Engineer's Role
At ACSES Engineers, pre-pour inspections are conducted by experienced structural engineers - not junior staff. Our inspectors have the knowledge and authority to identify issues, require corrections, and approve pours. We document every inspection with photographs and written records.
Common Issues
The most common issues identified during pre-pour inspections include insufficient concrete cover, incorrect reinforcement spacing, missing or misplaced starter bars, inadequate formwork support, debris or standing water in the pour area, and incorrect set-downs for services penetrations.
