Cutting or modifying a roof truss, and why you cannot
Someone wants an attic, a skylight, a bathroom exhaust run or storage in the roof space, and the trusses are in the way. The question that follows is always whether one can be cut.
The short answer is no, not without redesign. The reason is worth understanding, because it also explains what the alternatives are.
A truss is one element
A rafter is a beam. It spans, it bends, and cutting a notch in it reduces its capacity by a predictable amount.
A truss is not a set of beams. It is a triangulated frame where every member is carrying either tension or compression, and the whole thing works because those forces balance at each joint.
Cut one web member and the forces do not simply disappear. They redistribute into members that were never sized to take them, and the failure that follows is often somewhere other than where the cut was made.
The joints are part of the design
Truss joints are usually formed with pressed metal plates, and those plates are engineered for the specific force at that specific joint.
They cannot be removed and refitted. Once a plate is disturbed the joint is no longer the joint that was designed, and there is no site repair that restores it.
That is why a truss damaged in transit or on site gets replaced rather than repaired, and it is why modifying one in place is rarely viable.
The chords are not storage beams
The bottom chord of a standard roof truss is designed to carry a ceiling. Plasterboard, insulation and not much else.
It is not a floor. Putting storage, a water tank or a person walking around on a bottom chord loads it in a way it was never designed for, and the deflection shows up as cracked ceilings below before anything more serious happens.
An attic truss is a different product, designed with a bottom chord that works as a floor. Converting standard trusses into attic trusses is not a modification, it is a replacement.
What can actually be done
Trimming around an opening. For a skylight or a duct, an opening can be formed between trusses by trimming, with the loads transferred to the trusses either side. That works because it uses the trusses rather than altering them. The trusses either side then carry more, and they have to be checked for it.
Removing and replacing a section. Where a genuinely large opening is needed, a section of trusses can be removed and the loads carried on a beam spanning between the remaining structure. That is a designed solution with temporary support during the works, and it is the honest answer for an attic conversion.
A new roof structure. On some projects, particularly where the roof is being reworked anyway, replacing trusses with conventional framing or with a purpose-designed truss set is cheaper than engineering around the existing ones.
Getting the original design
Trusses are manufactured to a design, and that design exists. Where the fabricator can be identified, the original layout and member forces may be available, and that makes any assessment far quicker and cheaper.
Where it cannot, the assessment starts with measuring what is there and modelling it, which is more work.
The practical advice
Before any roof space work, get the trusses looked at and get the proposal drawn. Small changes are usually achievable. Cutting a chord or a web is not, and the discovery that it has already happened is a common finding on a structural inspection.
If someone has already cut one, it needs assessing rather than ignoring, because the redistribution has already started.
