Railway Parade Hurstville: Engineering a Complex Mixed-Use Development

Railway Parade Hurstville

The Railway Parade mixed-use development in Hurstville presented a complex set of engineering challenges that tested our expertise across structural, civil, and geotechnical disciplines.

Project Overview

Located in one of Sydney's most active development corridors, this multi-storey mixed-use project combined retail at ground level with residential apartments above. The site's proximity to Hurstville station added both value and complexity to the engineering scope.

Geotechnical Challenges

Hurstville sits on Hawkesbury Sandstone, which generally provides excellent bearing capacity. However, this particular site featured variable rock depth and zones of weathered material that required careful foundation design. Our geotechnical investigation identified these variations early, allowing us to design foundations that responded to the actual ground conditions rather than assumptions.

Structural Design Approach

The mixed-use nature of the building required different structural grids for different functions. Retail spaces at ground level demanded larger spans and open floor plates, while residential levels above required more regular column spacing. Transfer structures were used to bridge between these two structural systems efficiently.

We utilised post-tensioned slabs throughout the residential levels, achieving 200mm slab thickness across 8-metre spans. This reduced overall building height, which had planning benefits, and minimised concrete and reinforcement quantities.

Construction Methodology

Working adjacent to an active railway line imposed strict construction constraints. We designed the shoring system to minimise vibration impact on the rail corridor and coordinated closely with Transport NSW throughout the excavation phase.

Outcome

The project was delivered on programme and within the structural budget. The efficient structural design contributed to the overall project viability and demonstrated the value of early engineering involvement in the development process.
