Understanding Building Codes and Australian Standards

Building codes and standards form the regulatory framework that governs all construction in Australia. For engineers, a thorough understanding of these documents is essential for producing compliant, safe designs.

The National Construction Code

The NCC sets the minimum performance requirements for buildings in Australia. It is a performance-based code, meaning that designers can achieve compliance through either deemed-to-satisfy solutions or performance-based solutions that demonstrate equivalent performance.

Key Australian Standards for Structural Engineers

AS 1170 specifies structural design actions - the loads that structures must be designed to resist. AS 3600 governs concrete structures. AS 4100 governs steel structures. AS 1720 governs timber structures. AS 3700 governs masonry structures. AS 2159 governs piling design. And AS 4678 governs earth retaining structures.

Performance-Based Design

Performance-based design allows engineers to use innovative solutions that may not be covered by deemed-to-satisfy provisions. This approach requires a thorough understanding of the performance requirements and the engineering methods used to demonstrate compliance.

Keeping Current

Building codes and standards are regularly updated. Engineers must stay current with amendments and new editions to ensure their designs comply with the latest requirements. At ACSES Engineers, we maintain current copies of all relevant standards and incorporate amendments into our design practice as they are published.
