How to Choose the Right Structural Engineer

Choosing a structural engineer is one of the most important decisions you will make on a development project. A good structural engineer saves you money, keeps your programme on track, and delivers a building that is safe and efficient. A poor one costs you far more than their fee in rework, delays, and missed opportunities.

What to Look For

#### Relevant Project Experience

This is non-negotiable. A structural engineer who specialises in bridges is not the right choice for a 15-storey residential tower. Look for demonstrated experience with your specific project type, scale, and location. Ask for a project portfolio. Look at completed buildings, not just renders.

#### Chartered Status and Registration

In NSW, structural engineering work must be undertaken by registered professional engineers. Check that your engineer holds current registration. Beyond registration, Chartered status with Engineers Australia demonstrates independently assessed competence.

#### Construction Understanding

An engineer who has spent time on site understands the practical constraints that builders face. They design connections that can be constructed efficiently. They detail reinforcement that can be placed without requiring a contortionist. A structurally efficient design that cannot be built efficiently is not a good design.

#### Communication Skills

Your structural engineer needs to communicate effectively with the architect, the builder, council, certifiers, and you. Look for an engineer who explains things in plain language and responds to queries promptly.

#### Holistic Thinking

A great structural engineer does not design in isolation. They consider the architect's vision, the builder's methodology, the client's budget, council requirements, and the interaction between all building services.

Red Flags

Be wary of engineers who quote significantly below market rates, who are reluctant to visit site, who cannot explain their design decisions in plain language, or who have no demonstrated experience with your project type.

The Bottom Line

The cheapest engineer is rarely the best value. Engineering fees typically represent 1-3% of total construction cost, but the engineering decisions influence 30-50% of total cost through material selection, construction methodology, and buildability. Invest in quality engineering and it will pay for itself many times over.
